The Beast From The East has been with us for a week now and it's not good for the bees with the temperatures being negative for so long! The best that we can do in this weather is to make sure the hive entrance doesn't get blocked by snow. These ladies will all be huddled up together to stay warm - the colder it gets the tighter they cluster together. To generate heat, they will vibrate their wing muscles to maintain a temperature of around 20 degrees in the cluster. They can only do this if they have stores to eat that provides them carbohydrates for the energy they use.
Honey = Carbohydrates = Energy = Heat
